Required Ability Levels For Our Ski & Snowboard Courses
Whistler Adventure Academy endeavours to accommodate as many different types of participants as possible. Any participant on our course - both riders and skiers - should be a minimum of intermediate ability level (Level 4 or higher); and be able to ski or ride at a moderate speed confidently. You should feel comfortable on blue rated runs in good conditions. You should be reasonably fit and able to ski/board for an entire day, in order to ensure you are suitably prepared to undertake a fairly rigorous course. Although the above are our minimum requirements for ability and competency, we have many participants who are advanced level skiers and beyond. We seek to group similar abilities together during all courses so that everyone feels comfortable within the group they are in.
Call us with any questions about your ability level

This will surely be one of the absolute highlights of your experience with us. Avalanche Skills Training 1 (AST1) As your safety is of paramount concern, an integral part of all of our instructor courses includes an AST1 course. This 2.5 day field course, under the expert guidance of an ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) guide provides you with what we feel is the minimum requirement for safe mountain activity. Based on the most advanced knowledge available, the AST1 course will provide you with the skills required for: understanding of avalanche formation and release; identifying avalanche terrain; knowing the key steps required to carry out and plan a back country trip; using appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain; carrying out a companion rescue; understanding the limits of your training. The AST1 introduces you to the various safety equipment involved in backcountry preparedness and its proper and effective use. Upon completion of this course you will be able to start to identify snow pack characteristics and assess them, identify avalanche formation, learn how to route find - and get in some great skiing during this mostly practical course under the expert guidance of an ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) guide. Wilderness First Aid This 16 hour course concentrates on the basics of packaging and transporting patients and managing life and limb threats in remote environments. In relation to your on mountain experience, particular focus is directed at the environmental conditions and situations that you may encounter during your alpine activities – this includes prevention and treatment of common environmental problems like hypothermia. Professional Boot Fitting Session At the beginning of our 4, 8 & 10 week courses we offer a professional boot fitting service for all of our participants. Our expert technicians will analyze the shape of your foot, the fit of your boot and make any recommendations or adjustments required. Often something as simple as changing your foot bed can improve the fit and performance of your boots immeasurably. Ski Tuning Sessions Our ski and board technicians will teach you the skills of high quality hand ski tuning – utilizing the latest products, equipment and technology. A good tune is essential for getting the most out of your equipment and maximizing its function in our varied conditions. Covered in the session will be edge sharpening, waxing and question time. Fresh Tracks Tickets Fresh Tracks Breakfast is a local’s favourite thing to do the morning after a big dump of snow. Fresh Tracks breakfast offers early birds a mountain-sized breakfast buffet and early loading privileges. Upload to the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler Mountain between 7:30am and 8:30am.
